Current Projects

There is always something going on along the Waikato River Trails - keep checking back here for up-to-date information on our current projects!

Lake Maraetai Gully Restoration

A significant gully adjacent to Lake Maraetai has recently been fenced and restoration has started. In September 2011, volunteers planted 5000 native trees in the gully area and surrounds. This work will, over time, act as a buffer - protecting the quality of the lake water. Birds will also benefit from this planting, as a number of the species planted will become a food source. This is a long term project.

The South Waikato Environmental Initiatives Fund and Waikato Regional Council Environmental Initiatives Fund have recently helped make this work possible.

Huihuitaha Wetland Restoration

The Huihuitaha is an intact wetland adjacent to Lake Karapiro. A start has been made with the poisoning of the large number of willows infesting the wetland. Over the winter of 2011 approximately 600 native trees have been planted. The Huihuitaha Wetland is an easily accessible area and has great potential as the under storey is well established and ready to flourish. A possum eradication programme is also under way in the area. This is a long term project.

The Waikato Regional Council Environmental Initiatives Fund and the Waikato Catchment Ecological Enhancement Trust and Bio Fert have recently helped make this work possible.
